A Mapped Genealogy of Irish Surnames

On St Patrick's Day everyone you meet will claim to have Irish roots. Or you can also see a Belfast, Ireland, printable vector street City Plan map, fully editable, Adobe PDF. You can now authenticate these claims by referring to the Geo-Genealogy of Irish Surnames.

This Esri map shows the location of 2,500 Irish surnames by county based on data from an Irish census in 1890. The surname labels displayed on the map are sized to represent relative birth rates in the county of people with that surname.
If you enter someone's Irish surname into the map you can astonish them with a mapped visualization of where their ancestors probably lived in Ireland. If their name doesn't appear on the map you can instead regale them with the story of why there are no snakes in Ireland.  Source.

West Africa's Guinea-Bissau was part of the Portuguese Empire for centuries and was once known as the Slave Coast; today 14% of the population speaks Portuguese.

Once hailed as a potential model for African development, the country is now one of the poorest countries in the world.

The vital cashew nut crop provides a modest living for most of Guinea-Bissau's farmers and is the main source of foreign exchange.

But today the nation has a massive foreign debt and an economy that relies heavily on foreign aid. It has become transhipment point for Latin American drugs.

At the end of the 1990s the country experienced a conflict which drew in Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and France and ended with the president going into exile.
