Raster to Vector | Image to Vector | Raster to Vector Conversion Raster (or bitmap) images are described by an array or map of bits within a rectangular grid of pixels or dots. Lines, shapes, and other graphic image components stored in a format that incorporates geometric formulas for rendering the image elements describe vector images. Defining points and curves using software like Illustrator and Coral Draw creates the vector image. When vector graphics are scaled, the edges remain crisp and sharp regardless of the size. In this tutorial one can learn how to convert a simple bitmap or raster image into a vector-using illustrator. Firstly choose an image that needs to be converted from raster to vector, when doing this it is important that one chooses a bitmap image, as they are raster images. Open the desired image on illustrator making sure the image is large and can be zoomed in for better results. Once the image is opened, one can use the ‘pen’ tool from the ‘tool’ section or one can press the key ‘p’ on the keyboard, which is a shortcut for the pen tool on illustrator. After selecting the pen tool one can needs to go to the ‘color palette’ and select an appropriate color and stroke weight in context to the image. The color usually would be darker and different to the outline of image to reduce confusion when outlining the image. Once color is chosen and stroke weight set, one can click one the edge of the image and drag the mouse along to a distance and letting it go. This has to be done precisely over the curvature of the image making sure not much of the image is lost. This should be continued till one reaches to the starting point of the line drawn around the image. The ‘close path’ option may be clicked once the whole image has been drawn with and outline. One can then fill color in the outlined image by going in to color palette and filling in color. Once happy with the selection the original raster image can be deleted and the vector image would be created as a result. This image is now ready to be used separately to the original one and can be colored or used in a different image. While converting raster images to vector make sure that there is a backup copy of the bitmap image before one starts with the conversion settings. Also saving the work often so one does not have to start all over again in case something goes wrong is a very good idea.
