We know a little more about Iowa’s bowl scenarios with a few games in the books. We’ll also take a look at how the Big Ten is likely to get three teams into New Years Six Bowl games. With Ohio State beating Michigan on Saturday, and assuming Michigan State holds on to their lead against Penn State, the Big Ten is in real good position to get three teams into the New Years Six. 1. Clemson (beat South Carolina 37-32) 2. Alabama (beat Auburn 29-13) 3. Oklahoma (at Oklahoma State tonight) 4. Iowa (beat Nebraska 28-20) 5. Michigan State (beat Penn State 55-16) 6. Notre Dame (plays at Stanford tonight) 7. Baylor (lost to TCU) 8. Ohio State (beat Michigan 42-13) 9. Stanford (hosts Notre Dame tonight) 10. Michigan (lost to Ohio State) 11. Oklahoma State (hosts Oklahoma tonight) 12. Florida (hosts Florida State tonight) 13. Florida State (at Florida tonight) 14. North Carolina (beat NC State 45-34) Ohio State is done for the regular season at 11-1. Ohio State is already going to move ahead of Baylor, so the Buckeyes are likely at 7th right now. I believe Stanford beats Notre Dame tonight. A two-loss Stanford isn’t moving ahead of Ohio State, so now that puts the Buckeyes at 6th. If Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma later tonight in Bedlam, here is what the rankings would probably look like on Tuesday: IF that happens, and I don’t think it’s a crazy scenario for tonight’s games at all, the Big Ten not only gets three teams into New Years Six games, it also likely gets two teams into the College Football Playoff, with one of those teams being Ohio State and the other being the Iowa-Michigan State winner. If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, I do not think it will be possible for the Big Ten to get two teams into the playoff, unless Clemson would lose to North Carolina in the ACC title game OR Alabama would lose to Florida in the SEC title. Oklahoma will be one of the four playoff teams, along with the Iowa-Michigan State winner, plus Alabama and Clemson if those two teams win out. It also wouldn’t surprise me to see Ohio State jump Notre Dame if the Irish beat Stanford, unless they flatten the Cardinal. The losses for Ohio State and Notre Dame both came in rainy conditions to Top Five rated foes. Granted, Notre Dame lost at Clemson and Ohio State lost at home to Michigan State. Notre Dame best win is at home against Navy, who was ranked 16th this week but who was crushed by Houston on Friday. Ohio State just pounded Michigan State in Ann Arbor. If Iowa loses to Michigan State next week, there is a real possibility that Ohio State would be ranked ahead of Iowa in the final poll and therefore a real possibility that the Rose Bowl could choose Ohio State over Iowa. If that happened, and if Notre Dame is not in the playoff, I think we could see Iowa vs Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, or Iowa vs the Group of Five representative in the Peach Bowl. Northwestern beat Illinois and the Big Ten could put them in the Citrus and Michigan in the Outback, but those will be the two bowls for those teams. With Wisconsin’s win over Minnesota, they will likely be in the Holiday Bowl. NOTE: You can sign up to receive updates on our forthcoming trip to Iowa’s bowl destination by clicking on THIS LINK.
