Since Planet Earth isn't flat, some distortions in the data will inevitably occur during that transformation process. These show up as distortions of area, shape, direction, distance, and scale. Various map projections try and minimize the distortions, but no projection can eliminate all distortions all at once. Coordinate systems, on the other hand, are how we locate a point on the earth. Typically, we think of the latitude and longitude values from a GPS receiver as being the coordinates of a place. But, it's only been in the last few years that GPS coordinates have been so easy to obtain. There are many other ways to locate a point.
