Editing a logo or other image for your business can be tricky if the image’s file format is PNG. These files are bitmap image formats, so you cannot resize them without distorting the images. To print your company logo or other image on a large poster without pixelation, first convert the PNG file into vector form using a program or an online tool. Once the image is in vector form, you can resize or edit it in other ways without distorting it. Go to the Vector Magic website (link in Resources) and click the ‘Upload Image To Trace…’ button to bring up the Open file dialog box. Change any settings under the Improve Result section to manipulate the vector output. Click the ‘Download Result’ button to proceed. Enter a valid email address that you have access to in the Email text box, and then click the ‘I accept. Create my account’ button. Check that email address in a separate browser tab or window and look for an email from ‘Vector Magic Accounts.’ Open that email and copy the text next to ‘Email verification code.’ Switch back to the browser tab showing the Vector Magic website, and then enter the text you just copied into the ‘Verification code’ text box. Click the ‘Verify email’ button to activate your account. Click the ‘Enable download’ button to see the available vector downloading options. Click on any button next to ‘Vector’ to download the image in the specified vector format. Save the file to any location you like so you have an offline copy. Click the ‘Import from Folder’ button and browse to the location that contains the PNG file. Double-click the PNG file to import it. Click the ‘Fully Automatic’ button to convert the PNG file to vector format in a single step. Change any settings under the Improve Result section to alter the vector output. Click the ‘Done Reviewing’ button to proceed. Click the ‘Save As’ button and browse to the location where you wish to save your file. Change the file name, if needed, in the ‘File name’ text box. Click the ‘Save as type’ drop-down box and select the vector format you wish to save the result as. Click the ‘Save’ button to save the vector file. Launch Adobe Illustrator. If you don’t have the program, download and install it from from the Adobe website (see Resources). Click ‘File’ and go to ‘Open…’ Find and double-click the PNG file from the Open dialog box to open it. Click the arrow next to the ‘Image Trace’ button on the toolbar and choose a preset to see what the vector output would look like. If you are happy with the results, click the ‘Expand’ button on the toolbar to see the vector highlights. Make any other edits, if necessary, using the Adobe Illustrator toolbox on the left, and then save the image from the ‘File’ menu. Browse to the location where you wish to save your file. Change the file name, if necessary, in the ‘File name’ text box. Click the ‘Save as type’ drop-down box and choose the vector format you wish to save the vector as. Click the ‘Save’ button to save the vector image. John Ruiz began his writing career in 2008 as a freelancer writing for eHow and various technology, software and hardware blogs.
