This gene encodes a member of the transforming growth factor family of cytokines. The encoded protein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate a mature, functional protein with biological functions such as regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation and growth. The secreted protein can modulate expression and activation of other growth factors including interferon gamma and tumor necrosis factor alpha.
