'Learning Ace makes it easier for me focus on what I want to learn and not what the average search engine suggests I should learn.' Department of Urban and Environmental Planning School of Architecture University of Virginia Prof. David Phillips Mapping with ArcGIS -- A beginning Tutorial STARTING ARCGIS: ARCGIS ArcView 9.3 is a full functioned Geographic Information System for the desktop computing environment. It consists of several components including ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcTools. It is supplemented with several extensions. This initial session will focus on the design and printing of thematic maps from previously prepared data files using ArcMAP. ̌ Establishing a workspace ̌ Getting raw data layers and tables ̌ Preparing files for use ̌ Starting ArcMAP ̌ Opening an existing Map Document ̌ Exploring the elements of the ArcMap Desktop ̌ ArcMap’s Toolbars ̌ Working with a DATAFRAME ̌ Ordering Layers ̌ Symbolizing Layers ̌ Classification of Data (Text, Numeric, etc) ̌ Editing Individual Symbols ̌ Displaying Layers at different scales. ̌ Labeling Features ̌ Working with Data Tables ̌ Documenting and Storing Maps (Use Relative Path Names!) ̌ Printing your map ̌ Using the Layout Tools ̌ Data Frames ̌ Legend Editing ̌ Printing ̌ Exporting your map ̌ Other Topics (1) (1) (2) (3) (3) (4) (5) (5) (6) (7) (8) (10) (12) (13) (14) (17) (18) (19) (20) (21) (22) Establish your workspace: Since a geographic information system uses multiple files for the geographic features, the data base, the map document files, and index files, and since these files are cross-referenced often with complete path names, it is easiest if all of the files for a project are located in the same working directory or workspace. This space could be on the hard drive of the computer you are using. Once you have completed your work, you will back up the entire workspace to a zip disk or Home Directory. The recommended course of action is to establish a temporary directory on the hard drive (for example: C:TEMPAgmap1 or C:LOCALDATAAgmap1 or if in the Aschool T:TempAgmap1) and work in that workspace. Copy the sample data sets and change the READ/WRITE permissions. Sample data are available for this project. Using Windows Explorer, choose one or more of these from the subdirectories in the HOME2Coursesplan512_Phillipsfiles... subdirectories. COPY ONE OF THESE SUBDIRECTORIES to your WORKSPACE.
