I am hearing so much lately about Vector Graphics. Is it possible to create Vector Graphics with GIMP? If so can anyone recommend a tutorial for it? for vector graphics. If I see GIMP as the best alternative to Photoshop, then Inkscape I see as the best alternative to popular vector graphics editors CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator. Thanks! Do you think it is difficult to learn? I am starting to notice that websites that bring designers and clients together are now starting to require Vector designs. I feel like I have to start all over and know nothing about it. I will check out Inkscape, thanks again. for vector graphics. If I see GIMP as the best alternative to Photoshop, then Inkscape I see as the best alternative to popular vector graphics editors CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator. Sorry I should have added this. To learn inkscape go to vtc.com. Put inkscape in the search line. You can watch the first 3 sets of movies free. Find out what it is all about. Copy the index of movies, lets you know what to look for, then go to Youtube and start searching for what you want to see. The VTC movies are not there but Gimp guys or girls have probably put up a tutorial on what you want. No doubt Inkscape would be the way to go, to make Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg) but another good app to make vector graphics, which is actually a web app made by the Aviary developers at I am starting to notice that websites that bring designers and clients together are now starting to require Vector designs. First off, let me say Inkscape is a joy to work with. Its simple appearance belies its power. You have to get used to it, though. It's easy enough - don't sweat it. Also, it has a bitmap trace function. You can effectively use it to MAKE a vector graphic FROM a raster graphic, although this requires a tidge of patience to master. Secondly (as to your quote above) vector graphics are created and stored differently than raster graphics in that a vector graphic maps the image in such a way so that you can scale it as large or small as you like and not lose information. (In effect, it won't go all pixelly on you if you make it 4000% of the original size). People want them because they can scale something up if they have to and not lose quality (although you could just make a raster graphic at 900DPI and they could put it on a billboard). People REQUIRING vector graphics for 'Home' 'About' and 'Contact Us' button graphics are simply doing so because they think the word 'vector' sounds sexy and, by extension, 'necessary.' Either way, once it's in jpg/gif/png(usually*), and displayed on your website, it's effectively a raster graphic anyway. Varanae: I missed your post before I replied, which pretty much sums up my entire dissertation in one elegant sentence. , ) No you can not create in GIMP. But i think you can convert the GIMP created raster image in to vector graphic. I think for this purpose you can use the Adobe Illustrator. check some examples of vector graphic from here. Vector graphics is little difficult in GIMP. As for this purpose there is need to draw with pen tool and than convert it to image. Which takes some efforts as compare to other programs. Source.
