The year 1940 found the African continent largely under European colonial control, a situation cemented by the late 19th-century “Scramble for Africa.” While the specific boundaries and administrative structures had evolved since then, the overarching reality remained: European powers held dominion over almost the entire landmass.

British Possessions: The United Kingdom controlled a vast swathe of territory, including the strategically vital Egypt (though nominally independent, it was under heavy British influence), Sudan, British East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika – now Tanzania), Northern and Southern Rhodesia (Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively), Bechuanaland (Botswana), Nigeria, the Gold Coast (Ghana), and Sierra Leone. South Africa, a dominion within the British Empire, was also a significant power in the region, practicing a policy of racial segregation known as apartheid.

French Empire: France held the next largest empire. French West Africa encompassed Senegal, French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Dahomey (Benin), French Sudan (Mali), Mauritania, and Niger. French Equatorial Africa consisted of Gabon, Middle Congo (Republic of the Congo), Ubangi-Shari (Central African Republic), and Chad. Madagascar, a large island off the southeast coast, was also a French colony.

Other European Powers: Belgium controlled the vast and resource-rich Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo). Portugal held Angola and Mozambique. Spain controlled Spanish Morocco, Spanish Sahara, and Spanish Guinea (Equatorial Guinea). Italy possessed Italian Libya, Italian East Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Italian Somaliland – though Ethiopia had been conquered in 1936, the occupation was facing increasing resistance).

Independent Nations: Independent nations were few. Liberia, founded by freed American slaves, maintained its sovereignty. Egypt, as mentioned, possessed nominal independence but was heavily influenced by Britain. South Africa, while a dominion, had a considerable degree of self-governance. However, the most notable independent nation was Ethiopia, though its independence was interrupted by the Italian occupation, sparking fierce resistance.

Impact of World War II: In 1940, World War II was raging in Europe, and its impact on Africa was already being felt. The conflict would significantly weaken the colonial powers and ultimately contribute to the rise of independence movements. Italian East Africa became a battleground between British and Italian forces. French colonies were divided between those loyal to the Vichy government and those aligned with the Free French. Resources from across the continent were diverted to the war effort.

A Continent on the Brink: The map of Africa in 1940 reflected a continent largely subjected to European rule. However, beneath the surface, seeds of change were being sown. The war would expose the vulnerabilities of the colonial system, and the rise of nationalism would fuel movements for self-determination. The struggles for independence that defined the post-war era were already gathering momentum, even as Europe battled for its own survival. The colonial map of 1940 was destined to be redrawn in the decades to come.
